What Is a Floating Brake Disc?

A floating brake disc consists of an outer braking surface connected to the inner carrier by dedicated floating bobbins.

The floating bobbins allow controlled movement between the braking surface and the carrier. This design enables the brake disc to accommodate dimensional changes generated during operation and helps maintain correct contact between the braking surface and the brake pads.

The movement between the carrier, floating bobbins and braking surface is a normal design characteristic of a floating brake disc and should not automatically be considered a defect. Excessive or irregular movement, or signs of wear, should always be inspected by qualified personnel.

Finding the Right Floating Brake Disc

Original Diameter Floating Brake Discs

However, the description "interchangeable with the OEM brake disc" does not mean the product is universal. Diameter, thickness, offset, mounting pattern, installation position and all other technical specifications must match the original braking system.

Before ordering, also check whether the brake disc is sold individually. Motorcycles equipped with twin front brake discs may require two discs.

Oversized Brake Discs

The range also includes selected oversized floating brake discs.

Increasing the brake disc diameter changes the braking leverage, but installation may require dedicated caliper brackets, spacers or other components to correctly reposition the brake caliper.

An oversized brake disc should never be selected based only on its diameter or mounting compatibility. The complete braking system configuration must always be verified, including the brake caliper, adapter, wheel, brake pads and available clearance.

Fixed or Floating Brake Disc?

On a fixed brake disc, the braking surface and the mounting section form a single component.

On a floating brake disc, the braking surface is connected to the carrier by floating bobbins that allow controlled movement between the two parts.

The two designs should not be considered automatically interchangeable. The correct choice must always follow the motorcycle manufacturer's specifications and the complete configuration of the braking system.

Wear Inspection

Every Accossato brake disc indicates the minimum service thickness. The brake disc must be replaced once the braking surface reaches or falls below this specified limit.

It is also important to inspect:

• braking surface condition;
• deep grooves or cracks;
• distortion;
• uneven wear;
• carrier condition;
• floating bobbin wear and movement;

• vibration or abnormal noise during braking.

There is no universal replacement interval. Brake disc service life depends on riding style, brake pad compound, operating temperatures, motorcycle weight and braking system maintenance.

Whenever a brake disc is replaced, the brake pads should also be inspected. Brake pads that are heavily worn, damaged or already bedded into the previous brake disc may not perform correctly with the new component.

After installation, a gradual bedding-in period between the brake disc and brake pads is recommended. Follow the instructions provided for the installed components and avoid heavy braking during the initial kilometres.

Installation and Safety

The brake disc is a critical safety component. Installation should only be carried out after checking the cleanliness of the mounting surfaces, the condition of the fixing bolts and the correct tightening torque specified by the manufacturer.

Before riding, always verify:

• correct brake disc alignment;
• free wheel rotation;
• no interference with the brake caliper or brake pads;

• correct tightening of all fixing bolts;
• proper operation of the braking system;
